The football opens a story that goes beyond football and must be told right. It must be told as it should be, and that of Costantino Favasuli, 22 years old, right-back of Catanzaro, deserves it not only because he is the first player of Catanzaro to have worn the other night the blue shirt of our much-criticized National Team, but also because he is the first Calabrian to follow today the steps that were taken, for example, in glorious times past by Gattuso, Berardi, Perrotta, etc. But – and here football does not matter much even if it does – Favasuli grew up (only anagraphically, in fact, he is registered as born in Reggio Calabria) in Africo, ancient and painful heart of Calabria. A symbol country for many aspects. Africo is the country that 75 years ago was swept away by a terrible flood, with 70 dead. It rained for at least six days between October 14 and 19 of that 1951. On the Ionian Calabria, more water fell in those days than in an entire year. Africo and its Casalnuovo district no longer existed. The rain devastated Natile, Careri, San Luca, Samo, Nardodipace but for the africoti it was the beginning of another tragedy. The inhabitants were displaced to the schools of Bova, Melito, Reggio, Gambarie.
